Matching Connection Points flashcards
8 cards with the formulas, rules and traps from this lesson. Answer in your head, then flip to check.
Rule · 1/8
When two flat pieces join edge to edge, which ways must the contact edges face?
Opposite directions: north pairs with south, east with west. If the fixed piece's port faces east, the partner must present a west-facing edge.
Rule · 2/8
Quarter-turn table: how do edge directions change?
Clockwise 90°: N to E, E to S, S to W, W to N. Counterclockwise reverses this. 180° swaps opposites (N with S, E with W).
Fact · 3/8
What happens to a labeled mark when its piece turns?
It moves with the exact spot it marks. A dot one third of the way along the long edge stays one third along that edge; decoys slide it to the middle or a neighboring edge.
Rule · 4/8
Two contact pairs must meet at once: what must be true of their spacing?
The distance between the two marks must be equal on both pieces, , because rigid pieces keep their spacing. Marks 4 units apart cannot match marks 6 units apart.
Common trap · 5/8
Why can a choice with one correct point contact still be wrong?
One shared point fixes location but lets the piece spin around it. Orientation needs a second point, a required facing edge or a connector shape.
Rule · 6/8
Two marks A and B on edges that meet: how do their clockwise orders compare?
They reverse. If piece 1 reads A then B clockwise, the partner edge must read B then A clockwise. Same order on both means a flip would be needed.
Rule · 7/8
When does a tab fit a slot?
Tabs pair with recesses (out with in, flat with flat). The slot must be as wide as the tab and as deep as the tab is long; too narrow jams, too shallow leaves a gap.
Strategy · 8/8
Four-part contact checklist for each answer choice
Identity (right partners), position (same edge and spot on the piece), orientation (a rotation, not a mirror, same size), fit (connectors complement, zero overlap). Reject at the first failure.
