Ohm's Law flashcards

8 cards with the formulas, rules and traps from this lesson. Answer in your head, then flip to check.

  1. Formula · 1/8

Ohm's law: how are voltage, current and resistance related?

, so and . V is volts across the part, I is amperes through it, R is ohms. Example: 36 V across 9 gives 4 A.

  2. Common trap · 2/8

What are the classic errors when solving for resistance?

    R is V divided by I, not I divided by V (12 V and 3 A gives 4 , not 0.25). Ohm's law is a product, never a sum: 6 V and 2 never combine to 8.

  3. Strategy · 3/8

What is the shortcut for volts across kilohms or megohms?

    Volts divided by kilohms gives milliamperes: 12 V / 4 k = 3 mA. Volts divided by megohms gives microamperes: 5 V / 1 M = 5 A. Otherwise convert to base units first.

  4. Rule · 4/8

With R constant, how do current and power change when voltage doubles?

Current is proportional to voltage, so it doubles. Power goes with the square (), so it becomes 4 times larger. 25 at 10 V uses 4 W; at 20 V it uses 16 W.

  5. Rule · 5/8

Series versus parallel: which quantity is shared?

Series parts share the same current, and their resistances add (). Parallel branches share the same voltage; branch currents add, and the equivalent resistance is smaller than any branch.

  6. Rule · 6/8

How is voltage divided between two resistors in series?

In proportion to resistance, because both carry the same current. 4 and 8 across 24 V: I = 2 A, drops of 8 V and 16 V. Equal drops occur only with equal resistors.

  7. Formula · 7/8

What is the slope of a V-versus-I graph compared with an I-versus-V graph?

With V vertical and I horizontal, the slope is R (a steeper line means more resistance). With I vertical and V horizontal, the slope is in siemens (a steeper line means less resistance).

  8. Common trap · 8/8

Which devices do not follow Ohm's law with a fixed resistance?

Nonohmic parts: a tungsten lamp filament (resistance rises a lot when hot, so switch-on current surges) and a diode (conducts one way after about 0.6 to 0.7 V for silicon). Their V-I graphs curve.
