Timed Evidence-Based Reading flashcards

8 cards with the formulas, rules and traps from this lesson. Answer in your head, then flip to check.

  1. Term · 1/8

    What is the evidence span?

The shortest piece of the passage (usually a single sentence or clause) that settles the question. Locate it, read it carefully, then test every choice against it.

  2. Rule · 2/8

Can you go back to change an answer on the CAT-ASVAB?

No. Once you submit an answer and move on, you cannot return to it, so verify your choice against the evidence before submitting.

  3. Fact · 3/8

Can you return to questions on the paper-and-pencil ASVAB?

Yes, within the current subtest only if time remains, never to earlier subtests. Fill in remaining answers if time runs out, since there is no guessing penalty on paper.

  4. Fact · 4/8

What does official guidance say to do on the CAT-ASVAB when time is short?

Make a real effort on remaining items instead of random rapid clicking. CAT penalizes unanswered items, and a string of random guesses at the end can be penalized heavily.

  5. Fact · 5/8

Official PC format: items and time for CAT versus paper?

CAT-PC: 10 scored items in 27 minutes (up to 75 minutes when tryout items are given). P&P-PC: 15 items in 13 minutes. Always verify current official instructions.

  6. Strategy · 6/8

What three bins sort answer choices in a mental evidence ledger?

Supported, contradicted, or not mentioned. Only an option in the supported bin can be the answer.

  7. Strategy · 7/8

What are the five fast checks for eliminating a wrong option?

Does it contradict the text, add a claim, drop a condition or qualifier, shift the scope, or answer a different question? A yes to any one eliminates it.

  8. Common trap · 8/8

Is the longest, most detailed answer choice usually correct?

No. Length is not evidence; a long option has more parts that can be wrong. Judge every choice by support from the passage.
